So you want to be an audio engineer? Congratulations! Making music for a living can be extremely rewarding, and a ton of fun. However, it can be tough to start if you don’t know what you’re doing.

This is where school comes in. If you don’t live near an audio production school or prefer learning online you can still get a great education and gain valuable experience.

Online audio schools have made it possible to learn on your own time, while also giving you everything you need to practice what you’ve learned from home. In fact, if I started over, this is probably what I would do.

Below I’ve outline exactly what I would do if I started over and chose to learn from home.

Step 1: Audio Engineering School

Full Sail University - Online

Full Sail University
Programs:

  • Music Production, Bachelors of Science
  • Entertainment Business, Master of Science
  • Music Business, Bachelor of Science

Learning at Full Sail University has always centered around interaction and the exchange of ideas. Our online curriculum fully embraces this philosophy. We have developed our own online learning environment with the aim of being the most people-focused education experience on the web.

Step 2: Refine Your Ears

Train Your Ears

Visit Site

TrainYourEars.com dramatically improves the way you listen to music. This results in much better studio sessions, saving you time and money.

Correctly tuning your ear typically takes years. Now you can do it much, much faster.
In this business your ears are how you make money. It only makes sense to train them to quickly identify what’s really going on with your music.

Plus, where else can you gain this kind of experience from your bedroom?

Step 3: Equipment & Techniques

Lynda Audio Engineering Training

Visit Site

Lynda.com audio training is the last piece of the puzzle. At this stage in your progress, you should know a little about sound, have a little experience, and are ready to get your hands dirty.

Lynda provides the info you would only typically get from a hands-on mentor.

You login, learn what you need to, and get back to work. No fuss, no wasted time. They have in-depth tutorials and interviews from industry leaders on everything from hooking up your first DAW, to advanced mixing techniques. It’s really awesome.

Why These Programs?

These days it’s not easy to find high quality training at a fair price. So I looked at what’s currently available and did my best to filter out the garbage.

What’s left were these three very high quality programs. This is how I would do it, if I started over.

These three programs give you what you need without any wasteful extra. I explain further below.

Full Sail

1. I would start with Full Sail University Online Audio Production Program. This is a proven & complete audio engineering school. You can walk away with a degree, a great base of knowledge, and contacts in the music industry.

They are nationally accredited and specialize is music production.

It can be a bit pricey but I believe there is financial aid available. They can answer all your questions by clicking the “request info” button above.

Train Your Ears

2. After school you will be looking to get to work. This is where many fail. It’s tough to produce high quality music without an experienced ear. Acquiring an experienced ear normally takes years. You can speed up the process through training.

That’s where “Train Your Ears” comes in. It’s a simple online program that helps you speed up the process of correctly tuning your ear. You also learn a ton about equalizers. Valuable info you’ll need for your career.

Lynda Training

3. Lastly, Lynda.com has thousands of very specific and incredibly useful training videos. They find industry professionals and get them to record step by step detailed tutorials on everything from music composition to guides on individual DAW’s.

Seriously, they have countless hours of training for beginners, intermediate, and advanced users.

Including:

  • DAW Training Guides (Ableton, Pro Tools, FL, GarageBand, Logic, Avid, Reason, ect…)
  • Start to finish mixing tutorials
  • Mastering techniques
  • Hours just on individual audio styles like reverb
  • Recording techniques
  • Production on ipads and tablets
  • And much, much more…

It’s pretty awesome guys. It’s like having a mentor for dirt cheap, and they are always coming out with new stuff.

Summary

If I were to start all over again, I would slowly build my own studio while learning from flexible programs with proven track records. These three online training programs offer what would normally takes many years to achieve. And all from the comfort of my own home.

Learn the basics, practice, and hone your craft. If you want to be an audio engineer, this will be an excellent start.

Good luck guys!
